An extensive survey of possible sites for VERITAS in the vicinity of
the Whipple Observatory was made in 1998. Two attractive sites were
studied by a local architectural firm and application has been made to
the Forestry Service for either of these sites. Figure 21
shows the location of the selected sites relative to the observatory.
These sites were selected because they are:
- well shielded from current and future Santa Cruz Valley sky
brightness,
- topographically flat,
- nearby and can be supported from the FLWO base camp,
- near existing power lines,
- near existing roads,
- adjacent to, but not in, a wilderness area, and
- within line-of-sight to the observatory microwave
transmitter.

north of the Basecamp.
