Memories of Trevor

Here are some messages to VERITAS from Trevor's Japanese colleagues. We thank them for their kind words.

Dear all,

I am very sorry to hear of Trevor's passing. I was shocked by the very sad news. I would like to thank him profoundly for his pioneering work and great leadership in our field.

Best regards,
Taka Yoshikoshi

Dear friends,

The most remarkable era has passed with Trevor in gamma ray astronomy.
It is sad to be informed that our paths will now never cross again in no other way than I myself climbing up to the heaven.

Sincerely,
Tadashi Kifune

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Trevor. Surely he was a tough act to follow who brought the success of the field of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy via his enthusiasm.
Personally I remember many stimulating and happy conversations with him.
Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences.

Best regards,

First time I met Trevor in 2009. That time I was observing with VERITAS. One fine afternoon I saw Trevor in his office, I introduced myself and we talked for while. That was so exciting, I happened to met the person to whom I have known through his books and publications. He is such a kind person. He was always excited to discuss science. After that we met several times, as part of weekly discussion forum at the base camp and at VERITAS collaboration meetings. I also noticed that he has sharp memory. I am fortunate to know Trevor who has pioneered an entirely new discipline in astronomy.

Trevor has not only pioneered an entirely new discipline in astrophysics, but he has done it with a gentle, human touch and sense of humor that is truly remarkable. I feel extremely fortunate to have worked with Trevor for almost 20 years first at the Whipple 10m, then at VERITAS, and especially at the Tucson gamma-ray offices at the Steward observatory. While the offices had no windows, we did have 2 entrance doors, 2 car keys, a fax machine, a printer, telephones and a few workstations and, of course the gamma-ray lunch break; Trevor often escorted us to lunch to make certain we would not stay too long. He did like to discuss the world and science with his students and postdocs, and sometimes poke fun at one us. I think Jim was the target more often than others, but I could be wrong. Trevor provided a school and scientific home to many of us and for that I am very thankful!

Trevor was like an additional dad to me - one of several folks that have had a profound impact on both my career and life. Kathleen and I will always have such fond memories of the hospitality shown by both Ann and Trevor when we were new arrivals to Tucson. Ann: memories of your home (your land of eternal youth), your warmth, and the kindness that both of you always extended to your many (strange) guests will always be with me.
I thank Trevor for his advice, his wisdom and, of course, his humor. (I certainly will never forget why you shouldn't put your jacket on backwards when you go for a motorcycle ride!) I guess one of Trevor's greatest legacies is what he taught by example: that it is possible to be both a kind, decent person and a great scientist. I will really miss you Trevor.

Trev - my teacher, research collaborator for four decades, mentor, close personal friend and scientific inspiration ... now gone ... but your wonderful quirky sense of humour and those many wonderful memories remain vividly etched within me and will help me come to grips with your passing. Thank you for so much, and I realise, the astrophysics was only the half of it!
